From small groups of friends to large-scale organizations that could one day rival entire countries, DAOs are revolutionizing the way we think about governance, investment, and community. 

In this article, we will explore the many types of DAOs and what makes them unique, providing you with a starting point to learn more about this exciting and ever-evolving world.

Types of DAOs

Just like the wide range of human and non-human organizations, there is a corresponding variety of DAOs.

There are several types of sorts that can be done on DAOs, here are some of the most common:

• Due to their form of governance

• Due to their legal nature

• Due to its financing model

• Due to its use of blockchain technology

• Due to their scope of activity

• By their size

These are just some of the classifications that can be done in DAOs, but there may be other ways to classify them depending on the focus and objective of the classification itself. There are more than 800 DAOs so imagine…

Based on the primary activities or purposes of DAOs, we have categorized them into 11 types: Service, Collector, Product, Social, Protocol, Grants, Special-Purpose, Education, Media, Impact, and Others.

• Service DAOs, they make up the largest category of DAOs and include organizations that offer financial services, data analysis, and other technical services. 

Bankless Consulting, Raid Guild, Vector DAO, Lex DAO.

• Collector DAOs are investment funds that aim to accumulate valuable digital assets and make a profit for their members.  

Pleasr DAO, Flamingo DAO, Finger Prints DAO

• Product DAOs are organizations that develop and sell physical or digital products.

Gnosis Safe, Aragon, Rarible, Opolis 

• Social DAOs are digital organizations that bring people together for social purposes.

FWB, Botto DAO, Cabin DAO, BAYC. 

• Protocol DAOs are organizations that develop and maintain decentralized protocols and infrastructure.

Uniswap, Aave, Yearn Finance, Syndicate DAO, ENS DAO

• Grants DAOs provide funding to support various projects and initiatives.

Gitcoin, Giveth, Seed Club, Alliance DAO

• Special-Purpose DAOs are organizations that have a specific purpose or mission, such as a political advocacy group, a charity, or an artist collective. 

Krause House, Decentraland DAO, Developer DAO, Raw DAO

• Education DAOs are organizations that offer educational services and support for learning and professional development.

BanklessDAO Academy, DAO Masters, Odyssey DAO

• Media DAOs are organizations that produce and distribute media content, including podcasts, blogs, and video content.

This is by no means an exhaustive or mutually exclusive list, as the world of DAOs is constantly evolving. But I hope it gives you a good starting point to learn more!

While DAOs initially began as groups of friends, the concept has the ability to serve as a governance tool for entire nations.

Have you ever envisioned a future where election fraud is entirely eliminated? Could it be conceivable to delegate your voting rights to someone else via blockchain technology, similar to representative democracies? The answer is probably yes. Look at this list of controversial elections and think later if we need this technology. 

In the coming years, digital identities are expected to play a fundamental role in people's daily lives and in the functioning of societies. However, this topic deserves a separate article on its own. 

DAOs improve the democratic system by fostering investment, increasing transparency and accountability, improving decision-making, and promoting decentralization of power. They also offer a potential solution to global issues and could serve as a federation of public organizations to govern humanity ethically.

Proof Of Humanity and CityDAO are two projects that are at the forefront of innovation in this field, providing compelling evidence of the transformative potential of DAOs, even in the realm of politics.

In an increasingly interconnected world, the relevance of countries is being called into question. Originally formed to unite identities, economies, and geographical regions, emerging technologies such as Smart Contracts, DeFi, and the Metaverse are poised to revolutionize these traditional models permanently.

As I frequently assert, the advancements offered by blockchain technology present a dualistic challenge. If those in power choose to wield it against us (a not unfamiliar scenario, right?), we could find ourselves in a precarious position. Therefore, it is imperative that we expeditiously gain a thorough understanding of this revolution.

By being a Good Contributor you can not only shape the future of the communities and organizations, but also contribute to the global movement towards a more decentralized, transparent, and equitable society.
